The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness
Even if you're familiar with the subject matter, the book is surprising and saddening. Well-written and well-documented, this is one to recommend to anyone who doesn't see this as a serious and shameful problem. There are quite a few books out now on the drug war and its disproportionate effect on African Americans, but I'd recommend this one in conjunction with Douglas Blackmon's book and the documentary, "The House I Live In."
